My mid 2009 macbook pro has developed an annoying issue. It started intermittently a few months ago, after the thermal paste was replaced on the CPU. But it seems to be a more permanent problem now.

Firstly, I have vertical shadows at the bottom of the display, see picture attached.

But more annoyingly, it has developed a high pitched whiney noise. This noise changes in volume when I adjust the brightness and disappears when it is full brightness.

Luckily this isn't my daily computer and gets used maybe a couple times a month, but it is still annoying as hell.

I have been searching google for months with no luck finding the answers.

Can anyone help?

Still got this issue. I have found lots of instance of it happening, but no solutions.

As it did start when you did change the termopasta it could bee that you have ESD damage something in the mbp.
Or, you did somehow disconnected a cable a little.

You already know it but it's 100% hardware issue.

And I think it's ESD damage it sounds like that.
