I've just switched back from living in PC land for a few years. I'd like to connect my new MBA 13" to and ASUS LCD 1920x1200 monitor that has HDMI or VGA inputs. I've seen several on Amazon like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Mini-DisplayP...6LWM/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1311963830&sr=8-8

Anyone here tried one of these on the Thunderbolt port? Will I be able to use the monitor as separate workspace as well as "stand alone" with the MBA's display turned off?

I may get the new 27" Apple display when it comes out but am looking for a temporary solution.

Thanks!

That will work, but this is cheaper: http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10428&cs_id=1042802&p_id=5106&seq=1&format=2

Edit: HDMI version: http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10428&cs_id=1042802&p_id=5311&seq=1&format=2

I was looking at the cable I posted as it was all in one, I wouldn't have to have an adapter and a cable to the monitor.

Note that with the MonoPrice ones you need an additional cable to plug into the adapter, whereas the Amazon one is the full cable (everything you need).

Edit: yeah, what you said.

The MiniDisplayport cables are backward compatible with the Thunderbolt port. I got some cheap DVI ones from a friend that worked fine for me.

xraydoc, thanks for directing me to that site. I looked at my monitor again and it has a DVI input too. They have a one piece Mini Display Port to DVI cable that will do fine:
