display preferences don't stick in Lion

I have three monitors attached to a MacPro running Lion

When I restart, the arrangement and resolution of the monitors change in display preferences, and the primary monitor changes as well -- kind of a pain.

All changes to display prefs are lost again on the next restart.

Everything worked fine in 10.6.

I tried deleting com.apple.windowserver.plist with no success.

I searched the posts but nearly everything on multiple monitor setups refers to full screen mode.

Any suggestions appreciated.
