Sadly this setting isn't included in the Retina unless it's hidden somewhere else. That was one of the first things I looked for too.
 
I found out that you could have it show by going into the Macintosh HD/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/Displays.menu

The only thing is it doesn't have any options to change the scaling. Hopefully they fix this in ML.

EDIT: if you want to remove it. Command click it and drag it off.

I'm running mountain lion and they didn't fix it .... I'm going droid :rolleyes:

Very useful tip, thanks Pared3s. Note it is under /System on my Retina MBP with Lion. (I expect this will be restored in Mountain Lion...)

For the lazy here is my script to open it, placed in bin directory with chmod 755:

~/bin% cat ./displays-in-menu-bar.sh
open "/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/Displays.menu"
 
Or you could press I think it's either the option or control key and the increase brightness button and it takes you directly to the display options.
