Display settings reset after reconnecting mac

Hey Guys.

I've done a few google searches and can't find the answer to this so I'm hoping one of you knows the answer.

I have a macbook which I often use to 'dock' via mini dvi cord to an external monitor. I want the display settings set such that one screen is 'over' the other. I can set this manually in the settings but when I disconnect and reconnect, the monitor display location 'resets' to having both monitors beside each other.

How do I setup my mac such that the display settings are saved when I disconnect and reconnect (which I do often)?
