I have a bit of a strange problem, and I'd like some input on theories and advice for taking care of this issue.
Here's the problem: when my Macbook Pro 4,1 (early 2008) puts its display to sleep, I'm increasingly finding it difficult to resume work afterward. As a note, this machine does have the problem-riddled nVidia 8600 M GT, and Apple replaced the motherboard on this computer about three or four months ago.
Two problems usually occur:
1) The login screen doesn't appear. I get a beachball that seems to last forever. If I multiswipe to the left or right (changing desktops) I can see everything perfectly, and as the screen shifts to a desktop I can even manipulate dialogs and close programs, but once the desktop snaps into place the screen goes black again. I'm forced to do a hard shutdown. When I reboot, OS X restores all of the windows and programs that were open before the display was put to sleep, even if I had quit them.
2) The keyboard and trackpad are unresponsive. If I press the power button the screen will wake up and the login screen will appear, but the trackpad and keyboard don't do anything. I need to either reboot the system, or close to the lid, wait for the system to enter sleep, and then open the lid in order to restore their functionality. (It's worth noting that so far I've only noticed the issue of keyboard and trackpad unresponsiveness when I'm using the computer's built-in stuff only; when I'm at home and use Apple's bluetooth keyboard and "Magic trackpad" I haven't encountered this problem, although the first issue occurs.)
I can't think of anything that I recently installed or exposed my computer to that would explain why the problems occur and seem to be worsening in frequency. For now I'll resort to disabling the "display sleep" function in an effort to avoid the problem, but I hate to do that. I'm also worried that this may be indicative of other problems.
Thoughts, suggestions, anecdotes, etc. are greatly appreciated. Thank you!
