Ever since installing Catalina, my 2015 27" iMac has been having a very annoying issue. I typically leave it on all the time but have a hot corner set up to put the display to sleep when not in use. Whenever I do this or the iMac puts the display to sleep on it's own, after about 30 seconds, my external hard drives will begin spinning up and then spinning down about every 20-30 seconds unless I get the computer up and running again or shut it down. The odd thing is my external display flickers from sleep to awake on the same 20-30 second interval as well.

I originally thought this was related to Catalina as it only began happening after I installed it, though I have High Sierra installed on a separate partition to use certain 32-bit apps, and I've now observed the same behavior on that OS installation.

Has anyone experienced anything like this or have any ideas for troubleshooting? I've been on a call with an Apple tech for 3 hours and got nowhere. Thanks!

I have the same issue, latest Catalina installed on my late 2103 MacBook Pro, got a Cinema display on thunderbolt and have a Lacie 2Big on another thunderbolt connection. Disks spin in the drive when left connected for 20-30 seconds then they stop for about 2 seconds and start up again. Sure not healthy for the drives in any way. Have you found a solution ?
I have no other systems installed to test it, but I’m pretty sure this is a recent issue with Catalina, it does it even when disks are unmounted in finder manually.
