I want to use a Studio Display with my next laptop. But one thing Im worried about is that when I switch between plugged in display use and portable use without the display, what happens to the positions of the folders and files?

To what extent are the positions preserved? Does all the stuff from all your “spaces” go to just one “space”? And within each mac space (those screens you can swipe between) do the windows on the right stay on the right? And those at the bottom or left stay there too?

If stuff moves around is it a bother for you?

I was considering getting 1 MBP 14” and Studio Display. If this bothers me, would I be better off with a Mac Mini+Studio Display and MBA for mobile? Not sure how much processing power id lose with the Mini..

External displays become their own display "Display 2", "Display 3", etc. When the external displays are disconnected, all the windows within the external displays move to the built-in display. When the external displays are reconnected, the windows move back to the respective external displays in their previous positions.

Good to know they move back in a regular way. But..what happens if you shuffle the windows on your laptop in between?

That is: first use external Display. Then move windows around on laptop’s built in display…then what happens when I reconnect to the external? Does it go back to as it was? That doesnt apply if I closed windows on the built in display right?

And when they go back to the built in display..where do they go in the built in display? Is it in an organized fashion or are they just piled randomly?

My experience with the Studio Display - when I unplugged the Thunderbolt cable, all the windows of course moved back to the MacBook Pro screen, but when I plugged it back, the windows that were previously on the Studio Display screen moved back to where they should be. It's amazing. The same didn't happen with my previous LG monitor.
