Among the starlings
The last couple days my MBA has been bizarrely slow, both before and after a reboot. The only change to anything in the system in the days prior to that was letting the App Store update everything that was pending. When I started investigating today, three new processes have begun showing up in Activity Monitor and eating CPU:

CVMCompiler
Slack Helper (GPU)
Discord Helper (GPU)

Yes, I'm running Slack and Discord. I've just never seen these "GPU" subprocesses for them before.

Window Server is also chewing throughj massive amounts of CPU. The GPU History window in Activity monitor (which to be fair I'd never opened before today) just sits blank. RAM usage is at ~60%. Animations (ex: opening a new browser window) are painfully slow.

The computer seems especially sluggish when Slack is running, and Slack itself is unusably slow. But the slowness was also evident before opening Slack. For instance, opening the Applications folder popup in the dock takes about 20 sec the first time; after that it opens instantly.

Here's a screenshot of basic system specs:

Any suggestions for next steps for troubleshooting?

Thanks!
