Displaying drive space on desktop?

Hi guys! Sorry if this is a stupid and obvious question! But I have seen some desktops on this forum and those users have their Drive Space displayed under their Mac HDD icon on the desktop. And it is also on CD's inserted and stuff like that. I was just wondering how its done?

go into View and select show view options (or click command + j)
then click the show item info checkbox

do this while the desktop is active!
