Besides the size, what's the difference between the DisplayPort and mini DisplayPort on the MacBook?
 
displayport works with various monitors that are already on the market.
minidisplay port works only with apple's $900 LED monitor, and can convert to old standards.

But I think really the actual technical difference is just physical, apple needs to release a mini displayport-> regular displayport adaptor.

That's correct -- and not releasing a mini-DP to DP adapter is just stupid. DP monitors are out there (Dell's latest high-end models among others) and having to use DVI between a monitor and notebook that both support DP is rather dumb.

If Apple doesn't do it soon, I'm SURE someone else will as quickly as they can get them to market.
