Distance X needs to be held from face?

Do we know yet how far the X needs to be held from a face for it to work? Could someone hold the X from around 5-6ft away to my face in order to access the camera and take a quick photo, if this is something I wanted? Can the phone be held beneath your face or does it need to be held at the same level as your face?
