distant iTunes library?

My iTunes library is stored on my iMac at home, since I travel to uni, my girlfriends place etc, I'd like to access my personal library from afar with my PowerBook. Is there anyway to do this over the internet? But obviously with a method of keeping it safe from folk using this potential connection to listen to my music.
I don't care about having the ability to download music, just to play.

i have mine on an external firewire because i only have 60gb on my mac mini. just put it on one of those and carry it with you. think of it as a very big ipod.
