Distorted audio on ML

Since upgrading, I have noticed a distorted, rattling sound coming from the right hand side of my Macbook Air 2012. I assumed the laptop was faulty, but this evening I've tried to watch a film via HDMI cable on my TV and the audio was REALLY distorted too. I was using VLC 2.0.3 (i re-downloaded it today), but also tried MPlayer Extended and MPlayerX - both are better but it's still a bit distorted.

Any ideas?
