Distorted sound when using HDMI

I just hooked up my Macbook Pro to my HDTV tonight. The video is good but the audio is awful. It sounds distorted and a bit high (almost like elf voices!). I tried iTunes and VLC and they are both sounding the same.

Has anyone has this problem? Suggestions? :( I appreciate any advice, thanks!
