distorted sound with macbook pro

I've been having this issue for the past couple of weeks. My sound is fine when I play music and videos etc. but when I use my webcam the sound is very slow and mutated, I sound like a monster! I know it's something wrong with my laptop and not the websites I've used for chatting with my webcam because I tried a few different sites and I logged into those accounts on my bf's macbook and it was fine. It might sound like a dumb problem but I use my webcam for my job and the clients need to be able to understand me. I am using the built-in microphone and camera with the laptop. I've also tried using an external microphone and the sound was still distorted. I took my laptop into the local Apple store and they told me it was just an issue with my left speaker (on my receipt it says they replaced the "speaker assy")They said they fixed the problem but I am still having the same issue!
