Disturbing disappearance of some contacts from iPhone/iCloud

Did nothing to my phone and overnight I noticed that some contacts are mysteriously missing from my contacts list. Went onto iCloud.com and these contacts weren't there too. Seems random and not relevant to Facebook synced contacts since some missing contacts weren’t synced with Facebook.

This is really disturbing since it seems random and may reoccur again. I did a google search and it seems like a rather rare issue. I’m guessing that some people have no idea some contacts to missing because I only noticed it because one of my contacts whom I contact regularly.

Any idea what is going on? I only sync to iCloud.

Did you use a prior idevice before? If so, someone made changes to contact on that other decide and it updated your icloud info.

Seems really unlikely as I have all my old iPhones with me.

I only sync to iCloud.

A few of my employees had this happen to them, I figured out what happened and fixed it - a new default for Contacts in 7.1.2.
