Probably basic questions but I’ve never owned an Apple Watch. I hike, jog or go on long walks carrying my iPhone XS around answering/making phone calls, texting, taking the occasional scenic picture to send to friends/family and listening to Music or Podcasts via my Bose Sport Earbuds. The combo works fine but I’d really like to stop lugging around the seemingly bulky and heavy phone.

Questions. Can I substitute the iPhone for an Apple Watch and do ALL of the above? Would I still be able to use the Bose Earbuds or would I have to buy AirPods? Is the Music all streamed or downloaded onto the Watch? Can you take photos using the Watch?

Thanks!

You would not be able to do everything. The earbuds you should be able to pair the earbuds to the watch plenty of articles online about how. You can stream/store music on the watch just keep in mind the limited storage in the watc. The watch can assist in taking photos, there is no camera, but you can use it like a remote trigger for your iPhone.

Having a watch only setup would be difficult IMO, and part of that would be the storage constraints and the battery. You have to remember all of those battery tests from even Apple are "up to" if you are doing stuff like streaming music through a cellular connection and sending messages and all of that you will eat up the battery.

Outside of taking photos, you can do most of that with only the watch while you hike, jog or take walks. You will, as said, need to download what music or podcasts you want to listen to onto the watch. Do a little research on that before you go for watch only so you know if it will satisfy you to have limited music on the watch rather than your entire music library on the phone. Though, apparently, you can stream music on just your watch as well:

Do research also on battery life if you're doing all that on the watch alone.

I'll add that I don't think I'd go for watch alone if I was going on an all day hike, or one that was difficult or unknown to me. But I'm a "better-safe-than-sorry" type. I'd want to have the phone along just in case.
