DIY Apple Remote

Hey, is there a way for me to make my own apple remote to work for my apple machines or to program a TV remote to work with apple devices? I want to make my own because I find that the range of the apple remote is not far enough.
and/or Am I able to improve the range on the current apple remote that I have. I have both the old white one and a new aluminum one.

And just a thought, am I able to change the functions of the buttons on the remote-ie the front-row button to open a different application... ect
