DIY Apple Watch Dot

Hi everyone,

I scattered the internet and I didn’t find anything about this.
I was wondering how come in three years of Apple Watch no one realised that a hole punch cuts little rounds of exactly the same size as the dot on the crown of the Watch SS when it came out or even better of the latest Watch LTE, especially when everyone started complaining about he red dot.
After I got my new S3 Nike GPS I thought it looked a little empty and I didn’t feel like spending on something so basic like “WatchDots” so I got a sheet of vinyl sticker that I had sitting around that I use to protect the chainstay of my bike and decided to try and pierce it with a hole punch. Turns out that the little shape that’s cut out to make the hole is exactly the same size as the “original dot” of the other watches.

Has anyone else tried this on this forum?

A sheet of what?

Nice band by the way. Is it the official Apple link bracelet?

Hey thanks! Not it’s not the official one, I got that recently from amazon for £18 it’s an Elobeth band https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B017VUS8X2?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf seems nice so far but I can’t comment on durability as I received it only last week. The adjustment is with spring bars though not with he buttons like the official one.

The vinyl sticker I meant is something like this one https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/263638181588 and you get A LOT of dots out of that thing for a fairly cheaper price compared to the ready ones you see sold online in case you’ll ever need to replace it if it peels off.

Personally, the whole colored watch Dot never appealed to me.I can appreciate the customization, however; I just like the look of the regular stainless steel digital crown, which I’m hoping they remove that red digital crown in the future and bring that back to the original style.

If all that changes is the decrease of bezels and therefore screen size they'll have to put something on the Series 4 to differentiate it from the Series 3 from a distance. I'm imaging a bright green dot... lol

Now that Jony Ive is back in control of being chief lead designer, I’m curious to see if the red dot will be included for future Apple Watch models. The red dot never was a real major issue for me, but it certainly was very different and I don’t think the reception was accepted very well, at least on a tech forum. But it is creative.

I actually like the red dot on the grey ceramic, adds a bit of colour.

I think the red dot is set in stone for Cellular. If Apple has new watch that has new capability, like real time diabetes sensor however, that would justify a new dot color IMO.

Yeah, that’s why I did it, I thought that the regular stainless steel looks better than its aluminium brother with that dot contrasting, and I wanted to give that a try for free with some DIY.
I took for granted that people figured out that the hole punch cuts exactly that size by now especially the ones unhappy with the red dot, but as I said I didn’t find anything and I thought of giving an idea for a cheap solution to whoever wanted to give this a try!

I sincerely hope not. A bunch of random color dots, out in the wild? That would look a mess. I honestly think those features might just come standard. Or have a way to connect to other medical devices that someone would already have.

Along side other replies, I suspect the red-dot is here to stay. For better or worse. Or it could go away if all watches go LTE. But I doubt the latter is set to happen, so expect the same dots.

I agree. I think the red dot is also here to stay. I think it would be a poor reflection of Apples decision if they removed it within one year or make it look like they too were not happy with their decision if they did remove it. I’m Neutral with the Dot, but I wouldn’t have an issue if they did remove it.

To me the red dot is a non issue. I have a SS silver S2 (no red dot) and a SSSB S3 (red dot) and I think it suits the black quite well. Depending on finances/iPhone etc in September I am planning on getting a S4, probably go back to SS silver for this, and if it has a red dot I don't really mind.

To go back to the original poster though, considering on getting a sheet of red vinyl now to put a red dot on my S2 :)

...only joking :)

I did exactly what the OP did with my S3 a long time ago and am sure to have written about it here on macrumors, but I don‘t think I opened a specific thread for it. It works really well!

WatchDots has been selling these since 2015. I’m surprised to see this thread since this is old news with the red dot being added to the cellular Apple Watch Series 3 last September. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I myself bought some and they lasted a long time, simple as they may be as stated in the thread start.

I think the OP was talking about making your own for a fraction of the price.

That’s exactly why I wrote the post. For anyone who didn’t fancy spending for such a tiny piece of vinyl when you could do it yourself for free if you have the vinyl lying around like I did. Or for certainly cheaper than what they charge considering that you can get hundreds of “dots” from a whole sheet that costs less than a single set from WatchDots.

How many dots do you need for one Apple Watch? ;-)
