Algoriddim, the developer of the popular djay application for Mac, has released djay for iPad today. As we reported last month, the app takes advantage of new audio features that only recently came to the iPad with the release of iOS 4.2.

The app provides a virtual turntable interface that allows scratching and multiple controls as well as full access to the iPod music library stored on the iPad. It is optimized for iOS 4.2 with multitasking and background operation capabilities.

Algoriddim has created a promotional video highlighting the app's capabilities.

The app's features include:

- Realistic low-latency turntable interface
- Automix mode with automatic transition control (Fade, Backspin, Reverse, Brake, Random)
- Live Recording (with built–in organizer for recorded performances)
- Seamless AirPlay integration (wirelessly transmit your mix to Apple TV or AirPort Express station)
- Pre–Cueing (with optional headphones adapter)
- BPM analysis with automatic beat and tempo matching
- Full visual waveform with beat–synchronized scrubbing
- High–quality scratching
- Mixer, Tempo and EQ controls
- Pitch–Bend
- Cue Point Trigger

Any reason why MR is choosing to just plug random apps with no apparent reason?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

This is awesome news for all the aspiring DJs on MRs!

Any reason why MR is choosing to just plug random apps with no apparent reason?
Obviously you don't know that there's a overwhelming, but stealthily population of DJs just lurking below the surface on MRs.

Because this is one of the very few application categories where a touch screen actually is really useful and superior to a keyboard/mouse interaction model.

I think you should be concerned about this when you start paying a monthly subscription for MR. Since it's free for you to be here........:p

Why is this webpage scrambled?

This is a great example of content creation on an iPad.

It's nice to see the iTunes music library asset being used this way. I wish there were more API's to let Apps leverage the core data structures on iPad.

Beautiful interface, developers did a great job. Not really my cup of tea, but love to see cool apps.

any chance of a review from someone whos purchased ? little pricey to download just to see what its like, i have a full deck setup but this would be nice for house parties etc

I just downloaded and played around a bit. Very nice! It does a pretty good job analyzing the music for synching between two songs.

Mono?

Concept is almost perfect, but is this useless in practice: if one wants to use monitor (every dj wants), one must use audio output splitter that cuts both monitor and main audio output to mono. Did I miss something? (in Mac version one can use USB headphones for monitoring)

I've done an in-depth review of the app you should find interesting: http://www.digitaldjtips.com/2010/12/djay-for-ipad-review/. If you want a quick summary: if you like the idea of DJing on an iPad, just buy it. It really is a brilliant app, so well executed, you could happily DJ properly at a party with it. There's a couple of little tweaks I'd like to see but they are pretty minor. Just go for it!

Yep, surprisingly solid, particularly given that previous apps have required you to pre-analyse files on your computer. The current version doesn't allow you to change the detected BPM if it gets it wrong, but I'm assured this is coming soon.

Bluetooth headset?

Why is this an issue? Club soundsystems are often in mono anyway (mono is this context just means both channels will be the same, not that it will only come out of one speaker). At a party no one is going to notice if it is mono or stereo (I've not checked, but I assume djay outputs the left and right combined for each output so you don't lose any parts of the track), and you're only using the headphones for previewing so you won't care. If you want to be able to listen back to your mix in stereo, no problem - the recorder still records in stereo.

The only other option on the iPad currently would be to transmit the monitor audio wirelessly, as the Red Bull BPM app does - I've not been able to try this but it will inevitably introduce latency and decrease sound quality. Hopefully the iPad 2 will support two output streams! :)

My review will be up online soon (tomorrow at the latest) so I'll post a link, but if you want a quick summary: if you like the idea of DJing on an iPad, just buy it. Yeah, can't wait to use it at a party to be honest! A much more casual solution than bringing down the laptop and MIDI controllers - sometimes you just want to spin some tunes without having the hassle of setting everything up. Feel free to ask if you have any specific questions and I'll do my best to answer.
