.dmg questions

After I've downloaded a file such as Flash player 9...what am I supposed to do with the .dmg file and the white icon that says "adobe flash player 9". Also according to the adobe page it says i've successfully installed version 9 but when I go to flash player, its still says version 7. Any advice for a newbie?
