Good luck finding a good and affordable speaker system that will take advantage of the optical out.

What do you mean does it only work with certain receivers? I've got a Onkyo 7.1/5.1 that has hdmi, optical etc would it not work with the iMac?

That should work fine.

I think he's referring to stand alone speakers. It should work fine with your receiver. You just need a mini optical to optical cable or adaptor.

Yup, exactly what I meant. A good inexpensive 5.1 system with optical input is very hard for find.

Rather than starting a new thread I'll ask here.

I have a Yamaha receiver hooked up via Toslink cable to my optical out. Right now I'm running 2.1 in Stereo Mode on the receiver, but I just received my center channel and will be receiving the surrounds pretty soon.

Will the iMac deliver a stereo signal to via the optical cable, or while watching DVDs or Blu-Rays in 5.1, can it deliver the individual channels?

Thanks guys/gals!

It can send the individual channels. (You may have to adjust some software settings to get this working via VLC or DVD Player).

Why go optical? I have an Onkyo 5.1 HDMI system too and I connect via the iMacs' HDMI output.

This is what I use:

If you game at all, you'll get native OS X surround sound support in supported games via HDMI.

It just arrived today. I'm asking if it can communicate a 5.1 signal from my mac, or if it's only stereo.

If you're going to be watching movies in DVD Player or iTunes, it will process 5.1 signals fine. Just make sure you set the audio correctly in your settings and in the movie's playback options.
