The 3rd party keyboard apps (SwiftKey and Swype) stop responding randomly in messaging apps such as iMessage (and also Whatsapp sometimes). The keyboard shows up, but pressing it does nothing. The swype gestures don't work either. The only way to get the keyboard to respond is to switch to the Mail app, start composing a new email, change the keyboard back to the 3rd party keyboard (SwiftKey/Swype) and then switch back to the messaging apps. It is incredibly annoying. Anybody else have this issue? Is there a work around for this?

Yes... have this problem frequently. Also sometimes in mail, in Google search... pretty much everywhere. It's incredibly frustrating.
Within iOS8 beta 1 and 2 there are some bug fixes in regards to 3th party keyboards see also the general 3th party keyboard topic.
