The disc can’t be burned because an unexpected error occurred (error code 0x80020000).

Here we go! I just bought a new macbook pro to replace my old one. That one wouldn't burn a dvd to save it's life either. The new one won't either.

Do all apple dvd burners suck or what?

I have tried 3 different kinds of media and I haven't been able to burn a dvd in years, especially dual layer, never have on Mac. Windows has no problems what so ever.

The disc can’t be burned because an unexpected error occurred (error code 0x80020000).

That's the error. 3 different brands of media, I've tried with multiple .dmg files, just plain image files, dual layer and regular.

Anyone know why this basic function doesn't work on a $2300 computer?

Extremely mad and annoyed.

Never had a problem with mine. Why do some people assume that because they're having a problem, that all Mac users have the same experience?
 
I don't assume all users do.

I do however assume that when I drop 2300 on a computer it should work.

I appreciate you haven't had an issue but what I'm trying to figure out is why mine won't burn (especially dual layer) dvd's.

any help is appreciated. As I said, the disks burn fine (all 3 brands) with windows. ON a mac it's supposed to just work, I don't want to deal with windows but I do need to burn an occasional dvd.

The issue most likely lies in the process of burning. What steps are you going through when you try burning the DVD?

Don't have an apple store remotely close and I can't be without my only computer for as long as it takes to ship back.

If that's the last solution then fine, they'll get it but I was hoping for an answer or some help.

I have tried burning disk images from disk utility and that fails with internal error.

Then I thought I would just select a few images and burn them by control clicking and going to burn to disk. I have tried it with a custom name, the default name and blank name.

I have also used an optical disk cleaner.

Still no dual layer. Currently it's in the process of burning a single layer dvd so that's something, but I would really like to use dual layers as I have a ton of data I would like to backup.

Any tips or tricks or hints?

Okay first, not to offend you but I do want to give you a bit a reality check, $2300 ain't doodly squat when it comes to a computer. Laptops in the past with not even a fraction of the feature set or screen quality of your Macbook use to cost upwards of $4500 on up but I understand how you feel. It may not have anything to do with the Mac OS vs. Windows but maybe your drive doesn't work well with the type of media you are using. Before taking it to Apple or sending it off then try more types of media first. I've never had this problem either.

When you burn with Disk Utility it's best to drag the images to Disk Utility rather than burning them from the Finder. If you're right-clicking or Control Clicking and choosing "Burn xxxx..." it's using the Finder to burn rather than Disk Utility.
 
In this day and age 2300 for a laptop is a high end laptop and it should burn.

$400 windows laptops do it, and any Mac is better than a windows laptop!

The disk images are imported into the disk utility, I used disk utility to create one and same issue.

What brand media do you recommend?

I was able to burn a single layer dvd from finder with photos after several tries with a generic brand dvd. The memorex and verbatim didn't work.

Those trayless drives are like in-wall speakers. Even the best designs have a disadvantage built into their design. It's not just on Macbooks, it's any machine using a drive that sucks the disc in.
 
i had problems unless i used name brand Verbatim or another brand that I cant be bothered to get up and look at. Memorex uses various cheaper sources and those failed as did generics.
 
DVD Burner problem, my solution

Hi I had this problem and the solution was to edit the filenames, hyphen characters stopped the process, edit the file names and bingo it works.

I believe other characters can cause the problem, crazy but a google search will show it up.
 
I usually don't have problems burning disks on a Mac. I find that certain brands will have higher success than others. Namely Verbatim disks seem to work 100% of the time for me whether it be DVD, DVD+DL, CD, BD, BD-DL: all work great. Other brands like Memorex have like 20% successful burns for me when it comes to dual-layer media. Sony and TDK have also be good for me, but not perfect.

So if possible try different media? And it's possible (if you're trying different brands) that your drive is defective.
 
Don't know what to tell you. I burn regularly using TDK, Verbatim, HP and Sony media both at work and at home on iMacs, mac minis, Mac Pros, Macbooks and Macbook Pros (2006, 2007 and 2010 models). They've all worked fine for me.

The fact that your previous mac did this as well as the brand new one can suggest one of four things:

1. You just have REALLY bad luck and managed to get two bad drives in a row

2. Regardless of using three types of media, you bought all dodgy brands

3. There's an environmental issue (lots of dust?)

4. There's a problem somewhere with HOW you're burning these discs.

Short of actually sitting down with someone who knows macs and has successfully burned discs to see if they have the same problem on your mac, I don't see how we can resolve this one here.
 
Well I never had an issue either, BUT I don't use the built in stuff. Download SimplyBurns and see what thats like (so simple to use and never let me down from my old G4 to the brand new macbookPro).
 
I've always had problems with DVD drives, even with the G4 iMac. My MBP has had the drive replaced twice and the third drive doesn't work now unless it's an installation disc. I haven't really needed to burn anything recently as I publish videos online and use hard drives to back stuff up. It would be nice to have the option though. I understand your frustration but I got mine fixed while under warranty and you do have that option even if it isn't convenient.
 
I feel for you. I've actually had several problems with my 2.16 C2D. First, the logicboard had a flaw in it, so I had to have it replaced by Apple (outside of apple warranty, but fortunately still within my credit card's!) and 3 months ago, my optical drive gives me the same "internal error." No matter what I've done or tried, it won't burn anything...at least it still reads discs (knock on wood!). I wasn't the only one. My 3 younger brothers all have MBP's and they've had their share of problems: All three have had their motherboards replaced, 2 have had major video card problems, 2 have had bad monitors. They way this stuff happened, you'd think we abused our machines, however, it's quite the contrary. We treat them with great care! In fact, the Apple Store employee who handled one of my trips to the genius bar was so impressed with how spotless I kept it! So, it must be bad luck in my family?

At any rate, if you ask me, Apple computers have taken a bit of a downturn in quality, lately, especially with all the focus on the iPhone they've taken. They still have their awesome aesthetic value and are good powerful machines, yet, I can't help hear more and more problems going on with newer apple products, as opposed to stuff even 10 years ago. Case in point: My Powermac G4 400 is still a workhorse and operating like it was brand new....and it's seen me push it to the limits many times...without problem.

Regardless, I'm not going to stop buying apple. I love their products and know that with all things, their going to eventually break with usage. I just think they don't hold up as well anymore as they used to.
 
Use a slower burn speed

Try out toast

If you got 3 types of media, you probably bought the bottom of the barrel stuff that are on sale. What are their brands?
 
A lot asked about the brands or mentioned brands.

The 3 I tried were:

Verbatim
Memorex
and Generic.

My environment is very clean and this computer is about a week old.

I will try out a few more brands and see, I will also look into other software as well.

I take it by this logic, that the original 1x CD burner I bought in the 90s that was $2000+ should work better than a current $40 CD burner. :rolleyes:
 
A question: Do you have Windows on this machine? If so, can you burn a DVD with windows?

If no windows, can you get windows on it and try?

If it works with windows, then it's not the burner.

I use Toast 9 Titanium (iMac and MCB); when I first got my iMac, I had no idea how to burn a DVD on it without 3rd party software.

My experience has been the opposite; I could never get a decent DVD from my HP Pavilion but both macs burn fine DVDs.
 
I too have never had problems burning but if I read his thread correctly he is trying to burn and Image on a Dual-Layer dvd.

I have never need to burn a dual layer but if i am correct all dual layers are DVD-DL+ this might be his/hers issue.

Also what kind of image are you trying to burn? DMG, ISO, .IMG
