I'm thinking of upgrading to either a 13" MBA or 13" rMBP after the Haswell refresh, but I absolutely loathe the "T-shape" 180° MagSafe 2 adapter. It'd look so terrible sticking out of the side of my MacBook when docked. Moving back away from the 90° design is unquestionably one of Apple's biggest boneheaded decisions of the past few years.

I see that many third parties create "generic" version of MagSafe chargers. Has anyone heard of a 90° "L-shape" design with the updated MagSafe 2 spec? I haven't been able to find anything like that. Hopefully I'm just looking in the wrong places... :(

If you get the OLD Magsafe Power adapter and the Magsafe to Magsafe2 adapter, you will have an L-connection for a Magsafe2 MacBook.

That's not a solution! That clunky adapter sticks out even more than the damn MagSafe 2 does itself. I want something sleek and hidden like the old adapter. It just melted away from the MacBook. Minimal nonsense sticking out of the machine. The new MagSafe 2's stick out like they're charging Fisher-Price toys.

Apple really blew it with this one... but I'm honestly surprised that no third parties have rectified their mistake.

I think I saw something that makes your mac work with magsafe 1 that you install in the port. Its aluminum and semi permanent (you use the included tool to remove it)

It would also be nice to have a 90degree thunderbolt cable to match the power connector. My rMBP butts up against the drawer slide and it would be nice to save some space and reduce cable strain.

Didn't someone make some king of dock type thing that brought the connections out the side to the back that saved space?

The adapter thing mentioned above would look like this:

Apple won't license third parties to make the MagSafe connector, so we're stuck with whatever Apple offers. The illegal clones of the earlier power supplies were mostly junk, and some of them even damaged the Macs.

Yea, Apple blew it, and they don't seem to care.

I was wondering about why changed it back. I think some said because the design defeated the purpose of it being safe from being yanked. The L-shape continues to pull the laptop off the table.

Well, I'm afraid this is as close as you're going to get. Third party chargers just don't exist.

I'm glad they changed it, I found the L-shape to be very impractical and silly looking: sticking out to the back while other cables pointed straight to the side, and not disconnecting properly if the cable was pulled, etc.

I think Apple really blew it with the L-shape, and corrected their mistake with MagSafe 2 :D

I bought one from Amazon UK six months ago and very happy with it.

This. I was sad when I had to trade in my original t-shaped MagSafe when it started shorting out. The L-shape works if you never take your Mac off the desk, but it's not ideal if you actually use it as a laptop. Of course I also wish the port was on the other side. That seems to make so much more sense with my workflow.

The L-shaped connector was originally created to reduce strain on the cable and prevent tearing that was prevalent with the T-shaped MagSafe 1. Customers (read: teens and college kids) then complained they couldn't charge properly with a case on their Mac so Apple went back to the T-style.

Well, those kids then certainly had a point, and it's good that Apple listened to their complaints: besides the angled connector often getting in the way, the shape did not seem to reduce any strain.

Edit: It was a good idea to try to reduce the strain by turning the connector to the direction the cord is most likely pulled towards. But it is a far better idea to actually discourage users to put strain to the cable by making it disconnect if too much force is applied, instead of making it handle more force. In the end something's going to give in, and if it's not the connector disconnecting, then it's going to be the cable tearing.

Totally agree, I won't upgrade my 2010 Air until Apple changes back to the L-shape. The T-shape looks so ugly sticking out like a mouse ear, and it's a waste of space on the LH-side. Ugly and non-functional, case of Apple over-engineering with no common sense.

Definately worth waiting. I'm sure Apple will revise the design any year now. Any year! And until they do, there's probably a plethora of similar laptops to use in the meantime, with proper angled connectors.

Why does Apple not realize they are losing a lot of potentional customers, because of their wrongly shaped mouse-ear-like non-functional nonsense connector!

Fellow L-shaped enthusiasts! It's time to vote with our wallets! All those who think the silly T-connector is absolutely the worst thing in the world, let's not buy these inferior products! In fact, let's also start a silent demonstration by refusing to even discuss these products until Apple change their design! Join me, let's boycott Apple and any related forums, right now!
