Do apps auto shut off?

Ok I have had my phone all of two days I`m still learning it, but say I open a app and i`m done do I just hit the HOME key and the app shuts down? My battery is lasting all of a day and i`m wondering what am I missing here?

Apps can't run in he background.

To answer the question:

Yes, hitting the Home button signals the app to save its state and shut down. (Except for some Apple apps like Safari, Mail, SMS.) However, you can force quit any app by holding down the buttion for about ten seconds... you'll see it go back to the home page.

Battery life is a huge topic.
