I recently preordered the iPad 4th gen as my first tablet purchase for delivery later today. I have a bunch of iPhone apps currently that I know also have apps optimized for the iPad (i.e: twitter, evernote, etc). When I sync my iPad, will the versions optimized for the iPad be downloaded to my device, or will I have to do that separately?

The process will be automatic as long as the apps in Itunes are all up to date. It's the Devs who do the updating, and will often see "Updated for retina" or "New" but check for updates prior to setup and you will be fine.

Universal apps (apps that have a + sign in the app store), optimize automatically. Some devs release a separate version for iPhones and iPads, in which case you will have to go download (or purchase :() the iPad version separetely.

Only about half of my apps ended up automactically updating. This is hell having to manuelly attempt to update the rest.
