Do bumpers protect well?

In theory, seems like they should protect against falls about as well as a regular case, but I feel like with the way I'd use it that there would be scratches all over the aluminum back.

On the iPhone 4/4S. The bumper would get dirt underneath the edges and scratch the metal band. Every since they have have stay cleared.
