I run my website on a dedicated server, and my mirror site on shared hosting, and I get alot more search engine hits from my dedicated server. So why is that?
 
That shouldn't be a direct reason. There could be indirect reasons though, such as "suspicious" activity going on with the shared IP address on the shared server. I'm just throwing that out there as a potential though.
 
Angelwatt is right. I've had a few SEO companies request this as well. Not sure heads or tales why, but hey, maybe they know what they're talking about. It's definitely better for mail though. If you have some clown spamming his eblast on your server, your mail server IP could get flagged as spam.
