Do downloads from AppStore come in compressed form?

I just downloaded RR3 in a few minutes time. It's 800MB and my Internet speed is not at all fast. So my question is are downloads actually what the size of the app is, or are they compressed to make downloading times shorter?

Use your common sense, there is a reason it says Installing rather than just downloaded
