Do earbuds interfere?

I read somewhere that if the phone is in use the watch won't notify.

So if I'm listening to an audiobook on the phone with the apple ear buds with the phone in my pocket/purse and the screen off, will the watch notify me or no?

I suppose my question is, what counts as phone in use? Screen on? Earbuds plugged in? Music playing?

It's only if the screen is on that notifications won't buzz on the Watch
