So I am switching over to AT&T and would like to buy a 3GS, but I am coming over with 2 other people who will just get regular AT&T phones and are obviously going to start a family plan. Now, how is this going to work? Do I have to wait until my local AT&T gets more in stock and I wouldn't be able to buy one at an Apple store due to it not being an individual plan?

Since Apple only sells iPhones, you will have to get an individual line there. Then just swing by the AT&T retail store, BestBuy, Walmart or local AT&T authorized agent and pick up the other 2 lines and merge everything into a FamilyTalk rate plan. If you wan the best upgrade chances next year, make sure that your iPhone is listed as the Primary (anchor) line on the merged FamilyTalk rate plan.

Yes, you can merge the lines at anytime without impacting your individual lines contract.
