Do I have to buy .Mac to use mail?

Well its in the title do I have to get .Mac just to use the mail program? I would really enjoy using an ofline mail service. Right now im using hotmail and its ok and all but its not great. If I do have to buy .Mac to get mail what else would I be getting for that and what length of a subscription is it.

and im off school a day early just want to rub it in :D
 
You only need .Mac if you want your email address to be you@mac.com.

The Mail program (known as Mail.app sometimes) can be used for any POP/IMAP account.
 
No, you don't need .mac
You can probably use your ISP like Earthlink, etc.
Or as KT said, you can even use Gmail

Can't you use it with Hotmail too? I've heard you can (or at least used to be able to), but never tried it. Yeah, I know, Hotmail. But I had an account before M$ owned it, and darned if I'm getting rid of it now.

Used to, but not sure that it works now.
Why not Gmail? Too much trouble to switch over?

you need some Gmail?

if you have messages in it, just email all of them back to yourself or something like that.
I'm not sure if hotmail allows for download of all of them..

As everybody else here said, you don't need .mac to enjoy mail.app
but with the subscription of .mac you also get a bunch of other stuff and perks.
Take a look at the Apple site to see what else you get.
I have a .mac account and really think it's worth it.

I have Gmail, but I have thousands of messages in my Hotmail account. As I said, I've had it for years. Plus, I'm just that popular. :p

And no, it doesn't. Bastards.
 
hotmail recently made it so that you have to have their pay version for use with offline mail programs. Kinda stinks, 'cuz I'm trying to consolodate my mail management into just mail.app.

Rest is self-explanatory.

You have to have a mobile phone to sign up though, as a precautionary so real people are signing up, or people having 50 e-mail accounts or something like that. Still far better than yahoo or hotmail though...storage wise hands down and the free pop access which yahoo or hotmail don't offer for free.
