The iPhone that I was going to preorder today said the estimated arrival date would be early October. I got my iPhone 4S on release date at the Apple Store near me with no problem, just walked in and they gave me the phone. Is it still like that with iPhone releases? I know it's been a while so I'm not sure if I should go to the store and if I would get one right away, or if I pre order and wait until October delivery.

Do both. Order one just in case you can't get one in store. You can cancel the online pre-order if you happen to grab one in store.
I'll be trying this with AT&T since I got an expected delivery window between 10/4 - 10/10

I plan on doing both. I'm just worried they won't have any other than reserved phones on Friday.

As as Noob, do both. You can cancel anytime and they don't charge till right before shipping. Even if it is shipped and charged, you can still ask for a full refund. Shipping is free so no out of pocket for you. Good luck.
