Do I lose all my data if I download iOS 5?

I am about to sign up for a dev account and was wondering, how does it work? Do I lose everything? I would think it's a little ironic that I have lose everything to gain the ability of never losing anything again. . Any explanation would be great help. Thanks so much guys!

everytime you change firmware you have an option at the end to restore from a backup or setup as a new device
