I'm thinking of getting Office for Mac for my Macbook which I will update to an iMac in 12 months time. Does anyone know if the Office software will transfer over with all my files and folders or will I have to buy it again for the new machine?

You can install it on your iMac when you get it. Check your software license agreement to see what it allows, as far as having it installed on more than one computer simultaneously. You would have to transfer your files and folders to your new iMac, as the MS Office installation process won't do that for you.
It will transfer over*, as you buy the license for the software not for a ONE-TIME use. Otherwise even a reinstallation of the MS Office suite would be impossible even on the same machine.
*You need to transfer your files and folders yourself, as MS Office is not responsible for that.
