Do I need a screen protector?

I just got back from target with a white ipad 2 32gb wifi only version, and was wondering if I needed a screen protector. I just bought a smartcover knockoff with a backcover from monoprice and was wondering if that was enough. Do you use screen protectors?
 
I don't.

I don't use one on my iPhone either... but I know some people do because your keys might scratch the screen. You're not putting your iPad in your pocket, so I think there is even less reason to use a screen protector.
 
I use one on my iPhone, as I shove that in my pocket. My iPad is only shoved into a nice microfibre sleeve, so I don't use one. No scratches yet, and I picked it up on launch day!

I dunno, do you shove it in your pocket with keys and loose change bouncing around to scratch it?

What is your application, typical use.
 
This issue is always discussed first with the iPhone then with the iPad. I am sick of hearing the old 'keys in the pocket' argument because its bogus. I watched a Specialist at an Apple store try to scratch an iPhone 4 with keys and could not do it. Screens can and do scratch. Its up to you. Who's going to use it? If you have kids or pets that may get too close, maybe you should. If its just you, you probably don't need one.

The truth is though, these screens look MUCH better with no screen protectors.
 
my usage is just going to be around the house. I will be the only one touching it. Like I said I'm not going to take it anywhere unless I go on vacation. I have a monoprice leather smartcover with a back protector.
 
Although I am a screen saver fan, I think you would be just fine without one. When you go on vacation, you might want to have one though.
 
i never get screen protectors for iPhones... its glass, it takes something harder than glass to scratch it. I have never gotten one scratched... I only get a nice case that is solid but soft and has a lip around the front so that if it falls face down it doesn't impact the glass directly... as much as possible.
 
I use a screen protector on my original iPad and liked the feel of it. My daughter has taken over the iPad so it's good for her since she's very young and can make a mess on the iPad.

On my 2 gen iPad I don't use a protector and haven't found a need for one... unless my daughter starts to use it then I'll slap one on there.
 
I thought I didn't need one either but bought a screen protector anyway. Then it just sat on my desk for about a month before I got around to putting it on. As I was cleaning the screen, I found it, the faintest of scratches but it was there. I ignored it till I eventually got a replacement iPad (display light issue). I put that screen protector on it straight away and have felt better about it ever since.

Plus one on this comment. Exactly what I do with the same results. The overall feel of the screen on an Ipad is more important than on an Iphone and even the best protectors will change this.
 
I started using a zagg screen protector to avoid fingerprints. I'm OCD and am constantly wiping down the screen. Having a good screen protector will not show oil, fingerprints, etc.
 
I religiously used my smart cover with my iPad when I first got it. It turns out that something got between the cover and the iPad and scratched the screen. It isn't too bad, but certainly sickening since I am very protective of my devices.

I have been keeping it naked ever since, and nothing has happened to the screen (it stays at home 99% of the time).
 
I have had my iPad 1 since launch with no screen protector. No scratches whatsoever thus far (knock on wood). I do not baby it either, just use it normally. I bought one when I first got it and it didn't install properly and I did not like the look or feel of it. Rawdog all the way.
 
Waste of money. I would be way more worried about dropping the thing than scratching the glass.
 
It'd only be needed on a phone, since you put it in your pocket, in bags etc... But when you put an iPad in a bag you'd put the smartcover over the screen anyway. I don't think you need one.
 
I have an antiglare one on my ipad purely for its antiglare properties. I hate looking at my ugly mug everytime I'm looking at the ipad under direct light.
 
I've been using my iPad 1 without a screen protector since the first day of release last year and still don't have any scratches. I wouldn't use a protector unless I couldn't stand the glare or have little kids using it.
