do i need an ac adapter for a usb hub?

i have a belkin, 4 hi speed ports, it works with the ac adapter, but if so, why is the ac adapter there, for extra power?

I think you need the AC adapter if you need to use the hub with any devices that need a powered port, like some hard drives and probably charging an iPod.
