So i am going to be a first time mac owner in a few days and an upcoming college student. And i was wondering do i really need iwork? if im also getting Microsoft Office?

No. Office should do it. But, I have both coz my campus bookstore was selling iWork 09 for $39 and it was too good to resists at that price

Don't need iWork. But you could download Open Office and keep it in reserve in case Office '08 completely dies and you need to finish that last minute essay.

iWork could be worth it for Keynote alone, if presentations are your thing.

Numbers is, in my opinion, much better than Excel for general spreadsheet tasks. It is based around a slightly different paradigm that I find makes for better organised data. Lots of people prefer the Excel though, so I guess it's 50/50.

Word is far better than Pages.

You can always give the iWork demo a go and buy based on that. That'd be my recommendation.
