Do I need MacFuse AND ntfs-3g in order to get nfts write support?

I've always been confused about this and have never been sure what to tell people when they ask how I get ntfs working. I installed both MacFuse and ntfs-3g, but I don't know if I actually needed both or what. It's the source of a lot of confusion for myself.
 
MacFUSE allow Mac OS X to use other file systems. NTFS-3G is a NTFS driver for MacFUSE. Both are needed.
