Hi, I have a mid 2013 13" macbook pro. It has a 500gb hardrive and 4gb ram. Recently it has started to slow down a bit and I am trying to work out what the problem is. I have 87.6gb free on my hardrive, which I think is enough spare for the laptop not to be slowing down. I also have close to 400mb free ram. What would people say is the upgrade most likely to get my machine running back at its starting speed?

I would agree with a clean install as well.

HOWEVER, more RAM doesn't hurt. You can get an 8GB DIMM for $50-60. Things would run smooth.

ok, will get some new ram. How do i do a fresh install? Do I just re download it from the app store and install again?

Load the install disc or if you have a rMBP, select the restore partition when booting up the Mac.

Depends on the last time he restarted

If it was two weeks I'd say it's okay but this morning it's a lot
Right but as a general guideline, GBs of page outs are a lot. Everyone really should have 8GB RAM. It can be found on sale for $40 and is a good way to future proof the comp.

I agree before I upgraded from 4gb I was getting 10GB + page outs a day, however if someone didn't want to upgrade having 6gb page outs over a few weeks wouldn't be too big a deal.

But yes OP I do agree, upgrade. 4gb is too little in 2013
