Do I need to backup my hard drive?

So my iMac needs it's volume repaired. I have my OSX Disk. I have a geeksquad warranty on my mac. So I've been getting Beach Balls and my mac has been freezing. Geek squad helped me diagnose the problem. Since I have the black tie protection they told me to take it to Best Buy so that they can fix it. I think I know how to do it myself, but I'm afraid of accidentally deleting my hard drive. I really don't want to take this big computer all the way to best buy. Should I just let them fix it or try it myself?

It's always better to let someone who is a professional in the area to handle any problems with a computer. Even if you think you know what's wrong, you could mess something up and then lose everything. If it were me, I'd back everything up & take my computer to best buy and let the professionals take care of it.

Regardless if you have problems, you should back up your hard drive in case it fails completely without warning. As for your problem, you could probably try booting from your install disk and repairing the hard disk that way before taking it into Best Buy. However, since you have Black Tie protection, you might as well take advantage of it and get your money's worth.

Just buy an external drive and let Time Machine look after you, that way you will always have a sane mind.

You should always have multiple system backups to recover in case of loss.
