Do I need to eject an external hard drive that's connected to LG Ultrafine 5k Display?

I just purchased the LG Ultrafine 5k display to go with my 2018 15" MacBook Pro. I have an external hard drive connected to the back of the monitor right now via USB C. Ideally I'd like an external drive I can just leave connected to this monitor without having to eject, unplug and replug in each time I disconnect and reconnect my Mac.

Any thoughts on the proper way I should be handling this?

Yes you should eject it before disconnecting the display, but there is no need to do this physically. Just eject the disk from Finder.
