We all know about overcharging and how it hurts the battery, before going to bed let's say I shutdown my laptop, do I need to power off the electric switch to prevent the charger from overcharging the battery or do these new laptops have a mechanism to stop charging once they're full?

You can't overcharge. All modern electronic devices manage their charging intelligently. Just because it’s plugged in doesn’t mean the battery is charging.

I thought Li-Ion batteries had circuitry inside them that prevents overcharging.

I'd switch it off, anyway.
I want as few devices "powered up" as possible at night.
