Do I need to unlock the iPhone first generation to not use the data plan?

So I don't want to pay for a data plan for the iPhone first generation. So If I unlock the iPhone 1g will I have to pay the data plan? I don't want to buy a new phone, so I was planning to use my mom's old iPhone.

You might need to jailbreak it cause when you pop in your sim it might ask you to plug it into itunes to activate it.
Then it will ask you to select your data plan etc..
So JB and then go to this site to block carrier data on your iphones safari browser:

will this work on 3g and 3gs? I would like to give iPhones to my wife and kids but dont want to pay the data fee. but, I am guessing ATT will see it anyway.

Yes, that site I posted will block carrier data on 3G and 3GS models.
Give it a try. I know people that have been using iphones like that with no data on AT&T for a long time. Its not a guarantee but worth a try.
