Hello. I currently have an iPhone 14 Pro running the iOS 18. I’ll be getting the 17 pro in the mail on the 19th. Before I do the phone to phone migration from the 14 to the 17, do I need to update my iPhone 14 pro to iOS 26 for the migration to work? Thank you!!

Nope, but the new phone may get an update depending on what version of 26 it has installed on it from the factory.

Ok thank you! I think I may do the update on my 14 pro so I have a few days to mess around with iOS 26. That should be fine, right?

No, put the setting back unless you want to disable all future iCloud backups.

Check "Encrypt local backups" is selected, then click "Back Up Now" to the right where it says "Last backup to this Mac".
Great!! Figures I’d screw something up!!

So I plugged back into my Mac and checked “encrypt local back up” and above that “Backup your most important data on your iPhone to the iCloud” is chosen. It’s backing up again. Hopefully that’s ok!? You can see here the things that were checked off. Also, the “used space” I didn’t notice before. What would that be?

Looks good!

That "used space" may show something more informative after it's had time to think, but basically it's the OS itself and relevant caches.

Thank you for the assist on this and the info. So these are the settings I should always use when back up to my iMac? I don’t do it often so I’m never sure.

Yeah, assuming you want the phone to automatically back up to iCloud as usual, and manually click "Back Up Now" in Finder to back it up to your laptop.

If, lower down, you have "Show this phone when on Wifi" set, then you don't need to attach it with a cable, and you can see it in Finder when both devices are on the same network.
