Do I need to worry about losing existing files etc when upgrading?

Hi there,

I looked hard for a similar topic but I guess there wasn't one I could see so here goes:

I have dvd backups of all my music, but is it safe to back up my photos before installing Leopard? Has anyone here experienced the total nightmare of losing all their work or is it really as seamless for a .0 release as everyone makes out?

Backing up isnt so easy for me as we have no external drives in the house, unless you count an iPod or pen drives.
