Do I need win 7 to install win 8?

I never installed windows on any Mac I ever owned but I might need windows for school so I want to try out windows 8. But I have only found upgrades from windows 7 to windows 8 on Microsofts website and in stores.
Do I need windows 7 to be able to install windows 8?

You don't need .Install windows 8 clean.
