Do i neer to provide credit card info for free app's ?

I have set up an Apple ID and when i try to download à Free app , i am asked to link à credit card to my accountto verifiy my account.

Is this credit card Thank necessaire even when i only want to download Free app's ?

Apple wants it. You can get a $5 iTunes gift card, and that will keep it from asking.

For my wife's iPad, it wasn't mandatory to put it in. I left it blank and if I try to make a purchase, it gives me an error - which is good.
